Philip Pullman has announced the publication of his new His Dark Materials follow-up trilogy The Book of Dust.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Today programme, the author said: "People say, 'Is it prequel? Is it a sequel?' Well, it is neither.

"It's an 'equel'. It's a different story which begins roughly 10 years before His Dark Materials and ends roughly 10 years after."

The first series follows Lyra Belacqua (and Will Parry in the last two books), as they travel through various parallel universes. The Book of Dust will return to Lyra's story.

In another interview, Pullman said: "I know from their letters and tweets that my readers have been waiting patiently (mostly) for The Book of Dust for a long time.

"It gives me great pleasure and some excitement at last to satisfy their curiosity (and mine) about this book.

"At the centre of The Book of Dust is the struggle between a despotic and totalitarian organisation, which wants to stifle speculation and inquiry, and those who believe thought and speech should be free."

His Dark Materials, which consists of Northern Lights (1995, The Golden Compass in America), The Subtle Knife (1997) and The Amber Spyglass (2000), is currently being adapted into a TV series.

A movie adaptation titled The Golden Compass, by director Chris Weitz, was released in 2007. Starring Daniel Craig, Sir Ian McKellen, Nicole Kidman and Eva Green, it had a mixed reception, and plans for sequels were cancelled.

The Book of Dust is coming out in October.
