Date changed for MP Mike Amesbury's court hearing

The date has been changed for MP Mike Amesbury's court hearing. Amesbury, of Frodsham, Cheshire, has been summonsed to Chester Magistrates' Court to face the charge of section 39 assault.

The 55-year-old Member of Parliament, who represents Runcorn and Helsby, was originally due in court on Monday, December 30, but Cheshire Police has now confirmed the hearing has been moved to Thursday, January 16, 2025. The charge is in relation to reports of an assault on a 45-year-old man on Main Street, Frodsham, which was reported to police at 2.48am on Saturday, October 26.

Amesbury was suspended by the Labour Party in the aftermath of the alleged assault amid an ongoing investigation into the incident. Cheshire Police previously confirmed a 55-year-old man voluntarily took part in an interview under caution in relation to the incident.

The Labour Party confirmed on the Sunday, October 27, that the MP had been suspended “pending an investigation” into the incident. A Labour spokesperson said: “Mike Amesbury MP has been assisting Cheshire Police with their inquiries following an incident on Friday night.

“As these inquiries are now ongoing, the Labour Party has administratively suspended Mr Amesbury’s membership of the Labour Party pending an investigation.”
