David Beckham has shocked fans by posting a photo of himself sporting gruesome-looking facial scars and rotting teeth.

The close-up snap of the superstar’s face was shared on his Instagram account on Tuesday, giving followers a nasty surprise.

But the new post was simply a throwback photo of Beckham’s time on the set of Guy Ritchie’s forthcoming King Arthur, in which he has a supporting role.

“Rough day at the office @kingarthurmovie @guyritchie,” the former footballer captioned the photo.

Beckham’s role in the film has been kept quiet up until now, but he recently described the experience as ‘nerve-wracking.’

“I had a lot of make-up on. I could hear people saying, ‘It looks like him, but it’s not him,’” he told The Times.

“It was nerve-racking delivering the lines, but it actually went really well. I enjoyed it massively.”

Ritchie’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword stars British actors Charlie Hunnam and Jude Law in an action-packed take on the legend.

The first full-length trailer was released last month, giving a taste of the dramatic, brutal action, complete with sword fights, chase scenes and an explosion or two.

The official synopsis, released by Warner Bros, reads: “When the child Arthur’s father is murdered, Vortigern (Jude Law), Arthur’s uncle, seizes the crown.

“Robbed of his birthright and with no idea who he truly is, Arthur comes up the hard way in the back alleys of the city.

“But once he pulls the sword from the stone, his life is turned upside down and he is forced to acknowledge his true legacy…whether he likes it or not.”

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is set for release on May 12.
