David Beckham: Victoria and I are 'saving the pennies because we have so many children'

Despite the pair being worth an estimated £339 million, as of last year, David and Victoria Beckham are still apparently trying out the frugal lifestyle.

Speaking to the Evening Standard, the former Manchester United player explained that the days of flamboyant gift-giving between him and Victoria were now long gone. Say goodbye to the cars, to the gold, to the houses.

“We used to be very extravagant in what we’d buy each other,” he said. “But we’re obviously saving the pennies now because we have so many children to be extravagant with. So it’s the simple things, really. It’s more about spending time together, going for a simple dinner together. Having a nice bottle of wine together.”

In fact, he enthused about having a certain passion for fine wine, owning both a cellar and a “whisky room”, both spaces he designed himself. He added, “Victoria didn’t really drink wine up until very recently so she has all of a sudden discovered my passion. Well, she went through a stage of drinking a nice Blue Nun and a little bit of Lambrusco, but now it’s changed. I’ve introduced her to good, decent wine.”

He added, “I love Californian reds. I love the buttery-ness of Burgundy. Montrachet, I love. Cheval Blanc is one of my favourites.”

Add to that, one luxury Beckham apparently can’t live without is scented candles, explaining later on that: “I do like classic woody smells. My house is full of candles. I am a big candle freak.”
