Rumours are rife that David Bradley will appear in this year's Doctor Who Christmas special as the first Doctor... but is it true?

Bradley previously portrayed William Hartnell – the actor who first fronted the BBC sci-fi series –in 2013 biopic An Adventure in Space and Time.

Tabloid reports have now suggested that he'll appear in Doctor Who itself, inheriting Hartnell's role for a multi-Doctor story this festive season.

One thing we do know about the Christmas special is it'll be Peter Capaldi's final episode – will Doctor number 12 cross paths with his first incarnation, bringing the series full-circle?

Bradley was quizzed by the Birmingham Mail about the rumours and while he couldn't confirm anything, he certainly had a glint in his eye...

"Well... who knows?" he grinned. "You didn't hear it from me, that's all I can say!"

The BBC declined to comment when Digital Spy reached out for confirmation about the story.

Doctor Who continues this Saturday (April 29) at 7.20pm on BBC One, with new episode 'Thin Ice'.

Later this series, the Doctor, Bill (Pearl Mackie) and Nardole (Matt Lucas) will be pitted against the Ice Warriors, the Mondasian Cybermen and two different versions of The Master, with John Simm returning to team up with Missy (Michelle Gomez).

Capaldi and showrunner Steven Moffat will then both depart at Christmas, with Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall relaunching the show in 2018 with a new Doctor.
