Sir Elton John’s husband has opened up about the singer’s hospitalisation two months ago, with David Furnish admitting that he feared for his partner’s life after he contracted a potentially-deadly infection.
Elton was forced to spend a few nights in intensive care back in April after her fell “violently ill” whilst travelling back to the UK from Santiago, Chile, and David has revealed that it was a “testing” time for the whole family.
Confessing that he hid just how serious Elton’s condition was from their children, six-year-old Zachary and four-year-old Elijah, David explained to the Mirror: “We were all very frightened and very scared.
“The kids understood daddy wasn’t well. They didn’t know the seriousness of it, obviously, but they came to visit him in hospital as that was an important part of keeping the patient’s spirits up.
“We didn’t give them the full lowdown because we didn’t want to overwhelm them.
“He had terrible abdominal pains, a fever, swelling, chills, his teeth were chattering, he was sweating.
“It was like food poisoning but much more serious. He clearly needed to be admitted to hospital.
“It was a very rare bacterial infection. He was very, very sick. But all is well that ends well. He’s in a great place now. He’s back to work and on full form.”
Elton was forced to cancel a series of planned performances at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas after his hospitalisation, with the star spending time at home with his family as he recovered.
The 70-year-old icon’s friends reportedly begged Elton to “slow down” after his health scare, with many worried that he is going to “burn himself out”.
