Hibs have appointed David Gray and added £1million on to his playing budget to help the club legend deliver success.

The Easter Road outfit confirmed the appointment of Gray on a three-year contract. The new head coach is now working on putting his own coaching team together and has already made a move to bring in Liam Fox, from Hearts B team, as his No.2. He’s also keen to bring Liam Craig back to Hibs as a first-team coach and a goalkeeping coach. Aberdeen goalkeeping coach Craig Samson is being considered as well.

Gray - who scored Hibs Scottish Cup winner back in 2016 – took the job after being assured there would be money to strengthen his squad, as the budget under previous boss Nick Montgomery had been eaten up by returning loan players. Hibs have agreed to put a significant figure towards the first-team to allow Gray to make the changes that will get the club back to being a major force in Scottish football again.

Gray, who had been caretaker four times, said: “It is a real privilege for me to become the head coach of this great football club. Everyone knows how much Hibs means to me.

"It is a massive club with a phenomenal fanbase, that I know very well – so to be given this opportunity is a true honour. From being here as a player and a coach for over 10 years, I know what a successful Hibs team looks like and I am determined to succeed and take our club forward.”

Sporting director Malky Mackay stated the club had gone through a thorough interview process and Gray was the outstanding candidate. Mackay stated:“Following a robust recruitment process, David emerged as our preferred candidate and we are delighted to have him on board.

“Having watched his progression closely over a number of years, David’s ready to step up and become Hibernian FC’s head coach. David understands the pressures and demands that comes with a club like Hibs, knows Scottish football inside out, is an excellent coach and a strong man manager.

“He already has good relationships with the current playing squad and members of staff both at HTC and Easter Road, which provides an element of stability, and we know he’s the right man for the job. Everyone is looking forward to continuing to work closely with David for the upcoming season and beyond.”
