David Harbour has defended having a carpet in his bathroom, but admitted it was his wife Lily Allen's decision.

The couple recently gave Architectural Digest a tour of their New York town house and sparked a strong reaction on social media about the hygiene implications of having a carpeted bathroom.

Harbour, 47, told Late Night with Seth Meyers it was not his choice. He added: "I made very few decisions in this house. I let my wife..."

He went on: "Look I like it... There’s a romance to a carpeted bathroom... like you’re in Paris in the ’20s.

"I think everyone’s become such a nerd since COVID, you know what I mean? Such squares! It’s like, whatever, it’s a little bit of mould!"

The Stranger Things star - who marred the 37-year-old Smile singer in Las Vegas in September 2020 having begun their relationship in 2019 - also confirmed their children, daughters Ethel,11, and Marnie, 10, hate the decor of their home.

He revealed: "They said, 'Mummy we live in a clown house.' Yeah, they don't like the house."

In the video tour of their home the couple reveal a lot of very twee and kitsch interior design choices, including clashing floral prints, a tiger print carpet, frilly curtains and bed linen and elaborate ornamental taps.

They describe their kitchen - lined with gingham print fabric - as "plain English".

Harbour said: "When I first met Lily Allen, we first went on a date, at one point you did say to me you always wanted a plain English kitchen... I kinda liked it, I was like, 'Okay, let's do this.'"

Allen laughed: "That would be quite bold on a first date, to be like, 'Hi nice to meet you, by the way plain English is the name of the kitchen.'"

In 2019 Harbour gave Architectural Digest a tour of his New York loft apartment.

In comparison the decor was very modern, mid century, with plain painted walls and bare wood, although still cluttered with ornaments, framed pictures and plants.

The bathroom was a dark and windowless with teal tiles.

Allen and Harbour lived through lockdown together before deciding to tie the knot.

Previously they were conducting a long-distance relationship across the Atlantic, with Harbour living in New York and Allen in the UK with her children.
