David Haye will be summoned before the British Boxing Board of Control next month to explain his controversial actions in the build-up to his heavyweight bout with Tony Bellew.

In an interview with Standard Sport, Haye likened the fight to a public execution and went into detail of the injuries he planned to inflict on his opponent.

The Londoner, who suffered a ruptured Achilles during the fight and lost following an 11th-round stoppage, will face a panel to explain his words on April 12.

“Mr Haye was told to behave himself but the board have called him in,” the general secretary Robert Smith told the BBC. “He will now be given the opportunity explain his behaviour.”

Haye had said in the wake of the fight he expected to be fined by boxing authorities for his comments in the build-up to the fight.

“Some of the comments went too far,” he said. “If I have to pay a fine, I’ll happily do so.

“When you get into that beast mode before the fight, you’re not thinking about political correctness.”
