David Luiz is back in contention to start for Chelsea at West Brom following his bust-up with Antonio Conte.

Luiz was left out of the squad for the 1-0 win against Manchester United a fortnight ago as a punishment for questioning the coach’s tactics after the 3-0 defeat to Roma in the Champions League.

Standard Sport revealed the duo’s relationship has been under strain since September but Luiz has reacted positively to being dropped.

The 30-year-old, who was left out of the Brazil squad that faced England on Tuesday, has impressed with his attitude in training throughout the international break.

Conte claimed he left Luiz out for tactical reasons against United and started Andreas Christensen instead, while 17-year-old Ethan Ampadu was on the bench.

Christensen has staked a major claim to be first choice anyway due to his form this term but has been away with Denmark for their World Cup play-off against Ireland.

He played in the 5-1 win in Dublin on Tuesday and only reported back to Chelsea on Wednesday, when he joined in a light session. In contrast, Luiz has been part of Conte’s preparations throughout.

Luiz’s long-term future at Stamford Bridge still remains uncertain, however. His relationship with Conte has not soured as badly as Diego Costa’s did but the latter was sold after falling out with the Italian.
