David Strettle has warned his former Saracens team-mates Clermont Auvergne believe they can upset the reigning champions in next month’s European Champions Cup Final.

Strettle scored an outstanding try for the French side as they beat Leinster 27-22 in yesterday’s second semi-final. Their win came 24 hours after Sarries had beaten Munster 26-10 in Dublin to book their place in the May 13 final in Edinburgh.

Clermont were runners-up in 2013 and 2015 and although Sarries will be the favourites for the May 13 final, Strettle (above) is not daunted.

“I loved my time at Saracens,” said Strettle, who left the north London club in 2015. “I think Saracens have got better since I left, but I can see in the two years that I have been here how important this tournament is to [Clermont].

“You can see how good a team Saracens are — it is going to take a hell of a job to beat them. Clermont have this monkey on their back, but if we’re at the top of our game we can beat them.”
