Sir Terry fronted the show from its debut in 1979 until 1983 before being succeeded by comedian Les Dawson, who hosted until 1990 when millions tuned in to watch the competitive celebrity panel programme.

Paul O’Grady (as his alter-ego Lily Savage) then presented a revival on the BBC from 1997 to 1999, then on ITV from 2001 to 2002.

Talking about the show’s revival, David said: “I have some very big shoes to fill as presenter of Blankety Blank, I loved Terry Wogan and Les Dawson as a child, and Paul O’Grady was absolutely hilarious. I hope I can bring this much loved show to life for a new generation.”

He also posted a picture of Sir Terry – who sadly passed away in January 2016 after a “short but brave battle with cancer” – reiterating his earlier sentiment, writing on Twitter: “I have some very big shoes to fill as the new host of a special Christmas episode of #BlanketyBlank for @ITV.”

Peter Davey, ITV’s Head of Comedy Entertainment, described Walliams as “the perfect host.”

He said: “Blankety Blank is a much loved classic game show and this Christmas special on ITV will delight fans of the original whilst bringing it to life for a whole new generation. David Walliams is the perfect host for this, he’ll bring his comedic talents and warm personality to the show.

David previously appeared on a Comic Relief charity edition of Blankety Blank as part of a 24-hour panel show marathon in 2011.
