Dawn of new era as Longton's revamped Brassingtons shop now open
Family-run shoe shop Brassingtons has launched its new-look Longton store - just three days after shutting its city centre branch for good. Owners Peter and Louise Brassington have been busy transferring stock from the now closed shop in Hanley's Piccadilly to the revamped on Market Street unit.
And customers are now being invited to take a look around. A Brassingtons spokesman said: "We're now open again in Longton. Please come on down and see our nearly finished refit. There's still shoes and boxes everywhere but we'd love to see you and sell you shoes boots and slippers."
Brassingtons has been a popular destination for shoppers since it was founded in Hanley in 1901 by Lewis Brassington. Thousands of Potteries children would have been taken to buy their school shoes there – with the owners likening it to ‘Ollivander’s wand shop in Harry Potter’.
The shop was originally situated in Parliament Row (near Pound Bakery) before moving to Piccadilly in 1938. Five generations of Lewis Brassington’s family have worked at the store. The decision to shut the city centre store was blamed on a lack of passing trade.
