Dawn French almost retired from acting

Iconic British comedienne Dawn French almost retired from acting.

In an exclusive clip over at Digital Spy, the 59-year-old actress revealed that she almost retired from acting completely in order to concentrate on her writing… but her latest project ‘Delicious’ proved too tempting.

“I wasn’t really very interested in coming back in front of the camera again,” she revealed. “It’s lost some of its delights for me, if you like, and I’ve been writing a lot in the last couple of years and I like being solitary. I like being inside my own head.”

“I didn’t really want to do anything,” she confirms. “But Philippa Giles, the producer, sent me the outline of this script that Dan Sefton has written, and I was hoping that this would be another thing that I could think ‘It’s not that great so it’s easy to pass on it’. But then I really liked it.”

‘Delicious stars Dawn French in possibly her most provocative role yet – as Gina, a passionate cook who was once married to chef, Leo Vincent (played by Iain McGlen).

Of course, Leo is now married to Sam (played by Emilia Fox)… but gets entangled with Leo once more, until she finds out a secret that will apparently unite his former-wife and current partner as unlikely allies.

Sounds delicious.

“[Writer Dan Sefton] seemed to be able to write women very well and he was writing interesting aspects of women,” she explains. “It wasn’t clichéd, it wasn’t anything I’d particularly seen before.”

‘Delicious’ begins 30 December 2016 at 9pm on Sky1.
