Actor and comedian Dawn French has had her say on the UK General Election - by urging people to vote tactically to oust the Conservative Government. In a post on X/ Twitter, the Vicar of Dibley star, who lives on the Cornish side of the Tamar, shared a link to a website called ‘Tactical Vote’, an online tool for voters to quickly see which party in their constituency has the best chance of beating the Conservative Party locally.

The 66-year-old has long been a supporter of Labour, pledging her backing in the 2010 General Election, and supporting Sir Keir Starmer’s successful bid to be elected leader of the Labour Party back in 2020. But her calls for people to vote tactically around the country might not work where she lives, according to the latest polls.

Dawn’s tweet, posted just a few minutes before midnight on Wednesday night, quickly went viral, and has been shared almost 2,000 times and prompted almost 700 replies - many from people thanking her for sharing the tool, while others complaining of ‘another celeb telling us what to do’.

According to the second in-depth, constituency-by-constituency polling predictions from YouGov, it appears the message to non-Tory voters is most needed where Dawn French lives. The actor recently moved to Calstock, on the Cornish side of the Tamar, which is in the South East Cornwall constituency.

YouGov’s latest MRP poll has South East Cornwall as the only seat in the Duchy that will be held by the Conservatives, with Labour winning three and the Lib Dems winning the other two.

The YouGov poll for South East Cornwall puts the Conservative candidate Sheryll Murray, who has represented the constituency since 2010, on 34 per cent - just six points ahead of Labour’s candidate Anna Gelderd.

But YouGov are predicting a four-way split of the vote in South East Cornwall - with Reform UK candidate Paul Wadley predicted to get 20 per cent of the vote, and the Lib Dem candidate Colin Martin predicted to win 13 per cent of the vote, with the Green candidate Martin Corney on five per cent.

The ‘Tactical Vote’ website, promoted by Dawn French, is telling voters in South East Cornwall - particularly those Lib Dem and Green voters - to vote Labour instead.
