It was the show that made him a household name – but that doesn’t mean James Van Der Beek wants to be tied to Dawson’s Creek forever.
During what has been dubbed the most ‘awkward’ interview, viewers were left cringing at their TV screens during James’ appearance on This Morning on Thursday.
It didn’t even get off to a great start as Holly and Phil started the segment with a look down memory lane, showing a clip of James’ character Dawson alongside his on-screen love interest, Joey Potter, played by Katie Holmes.
After showing the clip, Schofield revealed Katie was now a ‘leading Hollywood actress’, Michelle Williams had ‘received four Oscar nominations since leaving Dawson’s Creek’ and Joshua Jackson stars in ‘Golden Globe winning drama The Affair’.
But that intro didn’t sit well with their guest.
As the screen split to an image of an unhappy James in the studio, he said: ‘I have been on television the last 20 years, just wanted to let you know.’
Following some nervous laughter from the hosts, Schofield dug a little deeper, asking James if he imagined he would still be talking about the show, almost 20 years after its 1998 debut.
After a few pauses and bewildered looks from James, he replied: ‘I would not imagine I would be sitting in front of a picture from 20 years ago.’
The exchange did not go unnoticed by viewers, who took to Twitter to criticise the actor.
One wrote: ‘How arrogant was @vanderjames on @thismorning. Came across so bitter he hadn’t done as well as others off @dawsonscreek. So rude!’
Another added: ‘Very awkward interview. How @hollywills and @Schofe remain so upbeat when dealing with his rudeness. I need tips’.
Why is James Van Der Beek so touchy and doesn't want to talk about Dawson's creek?! It made you famous, love ???? #ThisMorning

While another added that his appearance proved there were no hopes of a Dawson’s Creek reunion.
‘James Van Der Beek was definitely NOT impressed with the #DawsonsCreek flashback on #ThisMorning. Hopes dashed for a reunion.’
We wonder what Dawson would say…
