University Hospital Crosshouse has opened the latest feature to its healthcare service delivery.

The hospital now boasts a newly refurbished day room for dementia patients and their loved ones.

The opening ceremony was attended by patients, their families and staff and coincided with Dementia Awareness Week, which ran from May 27 to June 2.

Senior Charge Nurse, Alexis Patten, from University Hospital Crosshouse said: “Over the last two years, we have worked hard to create a safe space for patients and their families, so they can relax in comfortable surroundings and enjoy one another’s company whilst in hospital.

“The patients can do everyday things with their loved ones, such as watch television, chat and have their dinner.”

NHS Ayrshire & Arran also brought local staff from across all health and social care settings together for a learning and caring event in a bid to create awareness of dementia and delirium.

Mary-Anne Sheeran, Dementia Trainer for NHS Ayrshire & Arran said: “The event provided staff an opportunity to meet other colleagues from different health and care sectors who are passionate about dementia and delirium awareness.

“On the day, the staff from healthcare, community and care homes were able to share their experiences and good stories with one another, with the joint objective of being able to make a difference for people living with dementia and their families.”
