Day Turns to Night as Aurora Australis Paints Queenstown Skies

The Southern Lights were on full display above New Zealand on April 22, with stargazers across the country turning their eyes and cameras to the night skies.

From Auckland to Otago, the Aurora Australis was beautiful sight to behold. The aurora is a result of solar winds colliding with the earth’s magnetic field, producing electrical disturbances that light up the sky.

New Zealand media outlet Stuff.co.nz reported this particular night had the “perfect” conditions for a good display, with popular spots being packed with people out to see the lights. Credit: Jack Burden via Storyful
