It's becoming increasingly clear to fans of DC's Legends of Tomorrow that a stint on the Waverider isn't always a permanent gig.

Only three of the original Legends, who formed the team back in 2016's pilot, are still aboard the time-ship – well, four, if you count super-computer Gideon (voiced by Amy Pemberton).

With so many comings and goings, character exits and resurrections, not to mention anachronisms and doppelgängers, it can be tough keeping track of the Legends line-up.

But don't sweat it – Digital Spy has compiled an easy-to-read guide that should help clear things up. Please, don't call us heroes...

Current members

Sara Lance / White Canary (Caity Lotz)

(1.1, 'Pilot, Part 1' – Present)

Sara remains aboard the Waverider, having evolved from a savage killer to a wise leader and assumed the captaincy following Rip's departure.

Ray Palmer / Atom (Brandon Routh)

(1.1, 'Pilot, Part 1' – Present)

The resolutely chipper Ray is still a full-time Legend, applying both his genius-level intellect and the incredible shrinking powers of his Atom suit to aid the team.

Mick Rory / Heat Wave (Dominic Purcell)

(1.1, 'Pilot, Part 1' – Present)

The third and final original member still standing – who'd have thunk it? Former villain Mick isn't exactly reformed, but has found a way to channel his pyromania that benefits the universe. Most of the time.

Amaya Jiwe / Vixen (Maisie Richardson-Sellers)

(2.1, 'Out of Time' – Present)

A former member of the Justice Society of America, Amaya originally joined the Waverider to avenge the murder of her lover Rex Tyler / Hour Man (Patrick J Adams), later aligning herself with the Legends.

History dictates that she must return to her original time period of 1942 at some point, but Vixen's taking the long way round.

Nate Heywood / Steel (Nick Zano)

(2.1, 'Out of Time' – Present)

A historian and grandson of the JSA's Commander Steel, Nate was given the power to transform his skin into steel by a special serum. He joined the Legends after rescuing the team in season two's opening episode.

Zari Tomaz (Tala Ashe)

(3.3, 'Zari' – Present)

The only Legend without a sweet superhero codename, probably because the character's alter ego in the comics was... erm... Isis.

Zari joined the team early in season 3, from the year 2042, having grown up as a Muslim in a dystopian future where religion was banned. Like Amaya, she draws her power from a magical amulet.

Wally West / Kid Flash (Keiynan Lonsdale)

(3.11, 'Here I Go Again' - Present)

Wally recently took a brief hiatus from heroics over on The Flash and while he returned soon after, some fans were hoping we'd see Kid Flash hop over to Legends.

After all, if Team Flash have Barry Allen, do they really need another Speedster? Surely Wally's talents would be of more use aboard the Waverider?

It seems the brains behind the DC TV universe agreed, with Wally's transfer being officially confirmed in January 2018. Kid Flash was recruited by Rip in the episode 'Here I Go Again' before eventually becoming a fully-fledged Legend.

Former members

Leo Snart / Citizen Cold (Wentworth Miller)

(The Flash 4.8, 'Crisis on Earth-X, Part 3' – 3.10, 'Daddy Darhkest')

An alternate version of Leonard Snart / Captain Cold from the parallel world Earth X (for more on Leonard, see below).

While his doppelgänger was a reformed crook, Leo is an out-and-out hero. Having debuted in the 'Crisis on Earth X' crossover, Citizen Cold decided to join up with the Legends and travel across time.

After a short stint aboard the Waverider, Leo returned home to Earth-X, with a plan on propose to Ray Terrill/The Ray (Russell Tovey). D'aww.

Martin Stein / Firestorm (Victor Garber)

(1.1, 'Pilot, Part 1' – 3.8, 'Crisis on Earth-X, Part 4')

A mild-mannered physicist, Martin could fuse with Jefferson 'Jax' Jackson, a fellow Legend, to become the superhero Firestorm.

Martin had been considering leaving the Waverider for a quiet retirement with his family, but was fatally wounded by a Nazi soldier on a parallel Earth. He was forced to sever his connection with Jax to save the boy's life, which in turn led to Martin's death.

(Off-screen, Victor Garber opted to leave Legends of Tomorrow to pursue other projects, starting with a Broadway revival of Hello, Dolly!.)

Jefferson 'Jax' Jackson / Firestorm (Franz Drameh)

(1.1, 'Pilot, Part 1' – 3.9, 'Beebo the God of War')

In the wake of Stein's demise, Jax – having lost the power of Firestorm – decided to leave the Legends, leaving the team down two members.

"It's been so much fun portraying Jax and Firestorm," Franz Drameh posted to Twitter after his exit episode aired in the US on December 5. "Hope you've enjoyed watching as much as I've enjoyed playing."

Drameh will however revive his character after a four-month absence in the show's season 3 finale - could he possibly rejoin the Legends full-time? Watch this space...

Kendra Saunders / Hawkgirl (Ciara Renée)

(1.1, 'Pilot, Part 1' – 1.16, 'Legendary')

The first season of Legends saw the team pursue the immortal tyrant Vandal Savage through time. Savage plagued Hawkman and Hawkgirl – two heroes with the power of reincarnation – throughout history, murdering them both again and again in an act that he believed helped preserve his own life force.

Once Savage was finally vanquished, both Hawkman and Hawkgirl opted to leave the Legends to pursue a new life together.

Carter Hall / Hawkman (Falk Hentschel)

(1.1, 'Pilot, Part 1' – 1.16, 'Legendary')

In a shock twist, Hawkman – who'd been advertised as a Legends regular – was killed by Vandal Savage in the concluding half of the show's two-part pilot.

However, actor Falk Hentschel continued to appear on the show as a guest star throughout the first season, with a reincarnated Carter eventually reuniting (and retiring) with Kendra.

Wentworth Miller as Leonard Snart / Captain Cold

(1.1, 'Pilot, Part 1' – 1.15, 'Destiny')

It's a complicated one, this. Having been plucked out of time by Rip in the show's pilot, one-time menace Snart evolved and changed during his time on the Waverider and eventually gave up his life to save the team in a heroic act of self-sacrifice. No strings on him...

The Reverse-Flash would later take an an earlier version of Snart out of time, from a point before he became formed, and convinced him to join the Legion of Doom. This villainous version of Captain Cold was eventually defeated and returned to his proper time, his memory of recent events erased.

Leonard was later briefly replaced in the Legends line-up by his alternate universe counterpart, Leo Snart / Citizen Cold (see above).

Status unclear

Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill)

(1.1, 'Pilot, Part 1' – ?)

Rogue time traveller Rip Hunter was responsible for forming the Legends in the first place, having brought the team of misfits together to defeat Vandal Savage. Later, after a long series of adventures, he departed the Waverider, convinced he had nothing left to teach the team, and left Sarah in charge.

The third season of Legends had Rip resurface, having formed the Time Bureau, a new organisation dedicating to policing the timeline.

Reunited with the Legends in 1895 London, he had become obsessed with defeating the mysterious menace known only as Mallus. Having gone rogue to thwart his foe, Rip was apprehended by his own Time Bureau and imprisoned.

He was eventually escape to escape from prison, seeking out Wally West in China in 2018 with a request: help him save the universe.

You can expect the Rip character to keep popping in and out of Legends, rather than joining the team full-time again. "Honestly, I don't know [how many episodes I'm in] – I really don't know yet," Arthur Darvill told Digital Spy in June. "There's a plan, but who knows whether the plan sticks. They'd kill me if I actually gave away what the plan is, and also, guaranteed, the plan's gonna change!"

John Constantine (Matt Ryan)

(3.9, 'Beebo the God of War' – ?)

Having briefly fronted his own TV series and later appeared on Arrow, Constantine infiltrated the Waverider in Legends' recent mid-season finale, needing Sara's help to conquer a demon who'd possessed a little girl.

He featured in mid-season premiere 'Daddy Darhkest' and will return in the upcoming third season finale. It's unclear if John will be sticking around as a regular when the show returns for a fourth season, but fans are certainly hoping that's the case.

Possible future members

Jesse Quick (Violett Beane)

The Flash's Violett Beane, a.k.a. Jesse Quick, will make an appearance in the 15th episode of Legends' third season , 'Necromancing the Stone' - on the heels of Wally West joining the Legends.

Could she end up sticking around? Possibly, though it might make life on board the Waverider rather awkward given her previous dumping of Wally. That break-up was cold.

Ted Kord / Blue Beetle

Guggenheim has also confirmed that there have been discussions about introducing DC hero Ted Kord (the Blue Beetle) to the Arrowverse. In fact, the character of Ray Palmer – first introduced in Arrow – was originally supposed to be Kord, before a rights issue forced the writers to change tact.

Could Kord end up filling one of those two empty seats?

Michael Jon Carter / Booster Gold

Booster Gold is another popular DC character that could potentially surface on TV in future, according to Guggenheim.

It'd be especially interesting to see the 25th century superhero on Legends, since, in the original comic books, he's Rip Hunter's father. As if the Legends weren't already enough of a dysfunctional family...
