Something weird, and possibly wonderful, is going on right now as Warner Bros charts the course of its future DC Comics movies.

On Tuesday (August 23), it was announced that legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese was in talks with WB to produce a Goodfellas-esque Joker origin story that's completely unconnected to the DC Extended Universe.

Scorsese's project would cast a completely new actor for a thriller set in early '80s Gotham City, charting the rise of the Clown Prince of Crime as Batman's arch-nemesis.

That plan of action seemingly leaves current Joker actor, Suicide Squad's Jared Leto, out in the cold… but not so fast. One day later, The Hollywood Reporter says that WB has attached Leto to a second Joker project.

Leto is now on board to reunite with Suicide Squad co-star Margot Robbie for an untitled Joker and Harley Quinn spin-off that's being described as a "criminal love story".

Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, the writing-producing team from NBC family sitcom This is Us, are reportedly in final negotiations to pen the screenplay and direct this untitled project.

The Joker and Harley Quinn's reunion will fit within the main DC Extended Universe. The project is currently slotted by Warner Bros and DC Entertainment to follow Suicide Squad 2.

Warner Bros is attempting to differentiate itself from Marvel Studios by establishing both an interconnected cinematic universe simultaneously with standalone DC movies set within their own, separate continuity.

Whether this strategy will ultimately create market confusion remains to be seen. There is also no word yet on what impact this Joker-Harley film will have on Robbie's previously announced Suicide Squad spin-off Gotham City Sirens.
