DC's new Stargirl series has cast the role of Courtney Whitmore's mother alongside another new character.

Felicity star Amy Smart will play Barbara Whitmore, according to TVLine, joining the cast alongside Sleepy Hollow star Neil Jackson and newcomer Hunter Sansone, who will play undisclosed roles.

Barbara, who is also the new wife of Pat Dugan (Luke Wilson), dives back into the workforce as she tries to balance work commitments with marriage and motherhood – all while her daughter Courtney is inspiring an unlikely team of young heroes.

The new additions join the impressive cast for Stargirl, which includes Brec Bassinger as the eponymous character, as well as The Haunting of Hill House star Henry Thomas as Dr Mid-Nite and SWAT star Lou Ferrigno Jr as Hourman.

The series has also cast the villainous Injustice Society, with Joy Osmanski (Santa Clarita Diet), Neil Hopkins (Lost) and Nelson Lee (Blade: The Series) all on board.

Speaking of Bassinger's casting previously, Stargirl creator Geoff Johns said: "There is no other character in comic books more special to me than Stargirl, and after searching far and wide I can say there is no other actor on the planet that embodies her more than Brec Bassinger.

"Brec's warmth, strength, humour and positive energy are core to who Courtney Whitmore is. I'm so grateful she's signed on for the role."

Stargirl is set to hit the DC Universe streaming service this year.
