Deadly Australian Snake Found Coiled in DVD Drawer

A snake catcher in Queensland, Australia, said he considered himself lucky not to have been attacked after he opened a drawer full of DVDs on March 4 and found a deadly eastern brown snake coiled among the cases.

Stuart McKenzie, the Director of Operations at Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers 24/7, recorded this video in Bokarina, a coastal suburb of the Sunshine Coast region. He told Storyful finding this particular snake was a surprise.

He explained on Facebook that based on the description of the snake, he originally thought he was searching for a tree snake. According to the Queensland Museum, brown tree snakes are not generally considered to be dangerous. Eastern brown snakes, however, have been responsible for “the most deaths caused by snakebite in Australia,” according to the Australian Reptile Park.

McKenzie said he was fortunate he was taking his time while looking for the snake.

“This may have ended badly if I was being complacent,” he said on the post. “One thing I have learnt over the years is to expect the unexpected, and that’s exactly what happened today.”
