Popular gameshow Deal or No Deal is heading back to our screens, with Stephen Mulhern set to host a rebooted series on ITV.

Deal or No Deal originally aired on Channel 4 in 2005 with Noel Edmonds as presenter, and ran for an impressive 11 years — and more than 3,000 episodes — before being axed.

The show invited players to choose from a selection of numbered boxes and gamble against an unseen banker to determine and ultimately win the monetary worth contained within — or bag the bids placed by their hidden rival.

With its innovative format that kept both its in-house players and viewers guessing right until its final moments, it was a quick success, emerging as one of Channel 4’s most popular game shows, typically airing in an early evening viewing slot.

With a Deal or No Deal revival on the way, here’s everything you need to know to prepare you for the Banker’s big return…

When will the Deal or No Deal reboot air?

Stephen Mulhern’s Deal or No Deal reboot will debut at 4pm on Monday, 20 November.

It will be broadcast on ITV1 and available to stream on ITVX.

Part of what made Deal or No Deal so happily watchable was the simplicity of its format.

Chosen at random, each episode’s player was invited to bring their box to the centre of the gameshow and join Edmonds beside a mysterious telephone which connected them to the Banker. Players were then invited to pick the remaining boxes at random, revealing their monetary worth hidden inside.

As the game progressed, Edmonds would receive sporadic phone calls from the mysterious Banker offering a range of bids for the player’s box, each of which depended on what they thought it was worth based on the already revealed amounts.

The overall aim of the game was to win the highest amount possible, either by beating the banker at their own game or by having a high amount in your own box — and holding on to it until the end.

Originally based on the Dutch show Dutch Miljoenenjacht — which, translated into English, simply means ‘Hunt’ or ‘Chase for Millions’ — Deal or No Deal was so popular, it eventually received an American edition hosted by Howie Mandel with boxes swapped for suitcases.

The US version also featured a brief appearance from the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, as one of the people behind the show’s money-filled cases.

The new edition of Deal or No Deal will be fronted by Stephen Mulhern, who you may already recognise as the host of many other ITV gameshows including In For a Penny and Rolling In It.

He takes over from previous host Edmonds who presented the show’s former edition for 11 years.

Mulhern has already admitted that he's “beyond excited” at his new hosting gig.

“I’ve always been such a huge fan of the show – so much so,” he said. “I’ve been practising at home with small cereal boxes! It looks so simple but it’s an incredibly compelling game for both those playing and the viewers watching at home.”

He added: “It’s one of the greatest shows of all time and to be the new host is an honour! I can’t wait to get started.”

Deal or No Deal starts on ITV on 20 November.
