Death Sentences After Mob Murder Of Woman

Four men have been sentenced to death over the killing of a woman who had allegedly burned a copy of the Koran in Afghanistan.

The mob murder of the 27-year-old, known only as Farkhunda, in a central Kabul street caused outrage and brought protesters out onto the streets.

She was beaten and kicked to death on March 19 and her body then set on fire as police looked on.

The attack was filmed by mobile phone and put online - some of those arrested had bragged through social media about their involvement in the murder.

An investigation into Farkhunda's killing later found the accusations against her were false.

Forty-nine defendants, 19 of them police officers, were accused of failing to stop the attack and charged in connection with the killing.

The judge sentenced eight defendants to 16 years in jail and dropped charges against 18 others.

He will sentence the remaining defendants on Sunday.
