To mark turning 60 in February, gym instructor Deborah Clare set herself the challenge of running 60 marathons in 2024.

Debbie, who teaches regularly at popular local gym Snap Fitness Tiverton, has already completed 42 marathons so far this year, including the London Marathon in April in under five hours.

Debbie has a busy October lined up and is taking on the Atlantic Coast Challenge this weekend which takes place from Friday to Sunday. Strating from Padstow and finishing at Land’s End, the event will see Debbie and other participants run three marathons in three days.

She then has a series of additional marathons in November and December before the challenge culminates on New Year’s Eve. Debbie will be running the coastal path around Saunton, Woolacombe, Croyd & Morte Point and is inviting anyone to join and run alongside her.

“Fitness has always been a huge part of my life and I wanted to make my 60 th year special,” said Debbie. “I always tell my clients that no matter what you have been through in life your health is your biggest gift! No amount of money can buy you health.

“I train for my challenge by training myself through my classes at Snap Fitness, where I teach kettlebell strength training and Fitness Pilates. I’ve already met some incredible people on my journey so far, including people that have run with me and been a huge support. Although it’s an individual challenge, I’ve got so many people to thank for keeping me going – every challenge needs a strong support team.”

The charities that Debbie has highlighted for her challenge are close to her heart for personal reasons. Firstly, the Devon Air Ambulance, who helped save her life after being kicked unconscious by a horse and trampled on in 2010. The second is Fear Free Devon, a charity for domestic abuse and domestic violence victims which Debbie sadly suffered throughout her early life.

“I am grateful to all those who have given generously to the charities directly,” added Debbie. “I am not physically fundraising only highlighting my charities. I am very aware of the cost of living and financial struggles so many endure that I never want to put any financial pressure on anyone.”
