Deep-fried crisp and even: Chip shop owner offers up a festive BATTERED Christmas dinner

A chip shop owner has taken Christmas dinner to a whole new level by smothering it in batter and deep frying it.

Andrew Marshall is serving a poultry leg, battered sprouts, carrots, pigs-in-blankets and stuffing – as well as a gravy bomb and a mince pie to finish it off – all of which are fried.

The takeaway version of a traditional Christmas dinner totals an artery-clogging 1,100 calories but is relatively light on the wallet at just £9.95.

Andrew, 35, who runs Marshall’s Fish Bar in Collumpton, Devon said: “It was my idea.

“It snowballed from doing battered sprouts and pigs in blanket to seeing if I could do the Christmas dinner.

“It was a gimmick that I put onto Christmas and something a little different for my local audience.

“You’ve got a chicken leg, battered sprouts, battered carrots, battered pig in blanket, battered stuffing ball and gravy bomb – a ball of potato with gravy inside,

“The chicken leg is just normal, but there is a battered mince pie with it too.”

He added: “I make everything myself.

“The local butcher supplies me with the bacon which wraps around my sausages for the pigs in blanket before it is deep-fried.

“You have to clean the oil as you go because I also cook fish, chips and sausages so you have to skim it or you will get black oil and it smells.”

Andrew, who is a big fan of his own dish, added: “It’s a little heavy, shall we say, but the individual elements of it are stunning.

“But its not something you’re going to have every day.

“There are approximately 1,100 calories in it, that’s what I’ve worked out with my limited knowledge and the Internet.

“The mince pie has the highest calorie count of everything. But it’s a random thing that works very well.

“Sprouts are like marmite, you either love them or hate them, and the gravy bomb is really nice too.

“I have tried it all at once with some friends, just to gauge their opinion – they really liked it.”

Andrew has worked in the fish and chip trade for nearly 20 years and has run his own shop for the past six months.

As well as his festive feast he is already cooking up more battered plans for 2018.

He said: “We’ve got Burns Night coming up and we’ll be doing battered haggis, then at Easter we’ll have battered cream eggs.

“I could also do scallops for Valentines Day, a nice romantic battered meal for two with a bottle of wine.”
