Defender linked with Birmingham City has revealed his next club wish

Scottish starlet Max Johnston is the latest player being linked with a move to St Andrew’s as Birmingham City’s summer rebuild gathers pace.

Blues have already bagged four new players this summer with the arrivals of Ryan Allsop, Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Alfie May and Emil Hansson. There’s plenty more to come and Johnston, a 20-year-old right-back contracted to Austrian side Sturm Graz, is on Blues’ radar according to Sky Sports.

The report says Blues, Luton Town and Oxford United have enquired about signing Johnston on loan from Sturm Graz. Danish side AGF have also been linked with the defender.

Johnston only joined Sturm Graz from boyhood club Motherwell last year and made 20 appearances as they won the Austrian Bundesliga title. Sturm Graz also claimed the Austrian Cup to complete a domestic double.

Blues only have one right-back on their books in Ethan Laird and are looking to strengthen all areas of their defence. In an interview with the Daily Record, Johnston said his next move has to yield regular football.

“It has always been about playing football for me,” he said. “Wherever I go next season I want to push on again. I want to get to the highest level I can. I don’t want to go to a club and pick up a decent wage but having very little chance of first team football.

“I want to learn, develop and progress. I want to go to a club where I know if I can do well that I will get a run in the first team. I know you are never guaranteed to play but I want to give myself the best opportunity to do that. It is then up to me to push and win a jersey.”
