Yahoo News Defenders launches Phase 2 of Marvel's Netflix universe
It's all been building to this... and now Marvel's big team-up series The Defenders will launch the next phase of its Netflix shows.
Finn Jones – who plays Danny Rand / Iron Fist – told Digital Spy that the eight-part series "feels like the end of Phase One" and "the beginning of another phase".
"Let's just say there are certain events that happen at the end of The Defenders which are going to rock everyone's world," he hinted. "So people aren't going to be the same after the end of The Defenders."
The Defenders will be followed later this year by The Punisher, with new seasons of Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage and Iron Fist also confirmed.
The relationship between Danny Rand and Luke Cage (Mike Colter) – a fan-favourite pairing from the comics – will be established on-screen in The Defenders, and is expected to feature prominently in future Marvel / Netflix series.
"Me and Mike get on really well, we have a natural good chemistry," said Jones. "The way that Marco's written Danny and Luke is really clever – it's not on the nose, and it feels relevant. The pairing feels relevant, which I think is the most important thing."
Charlie Cox, returning as Matt Murdock / Daredevil, added: "They're some of my favourite scenes, actually. And it definitely feels like the start of something big."
The Defenders is the culmination of Marvel's original deal with Netflix, with all four solo series and the final ensemble show all being announced back in late 2013.
Looking back, Jones admits: "I don't think we really understood what we'd got ourselves into."
"Yeah... that's just a lot to compute," agreed Cox. "That's Phase One? How many f**king Phases are there?!
"I go into so many meetings, where they're like, 'We're making this show, but the end goal is that we're gonna rule the world' – and then you do a pilot and it doesn't get picked up to series.
"So I remember signing this contract and just thinking, 'Yeah, let's just deal with Daredevil, shall we? And see how it goes'."
The Defenders will launch all eight episodes exclusively on Netflix this Friday (August 18).
