The Defenders post-credits scene explained as Marvel series hits Netflix

New Netflix series The Defenders - the on-screen union of Marvel superheroes Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist - was added to the streaming service today with fans no doubt prepping to binge all eight episodes this weekend (unless, of course, you already have).

Set a few months after the events of Daredevil season two (and a month after Iron Fist's debut season), the heroes - played by Charlie Cox, Krysten Ritter, Mike Colter and Finn Jones - unite to fight a common enemy in New York City, namely The Hand led by Sigourney Weaver's villainess, Alexandra.

Once you complete your binge, don't click away straight away - Netflix has treated you to a post-credit scene which sets up a future spinoff focused on another Marvel character.

The post-credits sequence serves as the first trailer for The Punisher series which will see Jon Bernthal reprise his role of Frank Castle. It's a brief clip providing a glimpse into Castle's backstory before the tragic events which turned him into a cold-blooded killer. The teaser shows Castle smashing his own skull-logo into a concrete floor.

The Punisher will hit Netflix later this year.
