Dejected Pirates Fans Go Wild for Batboy During Defeat to Cardinals

Crestfallen Pittsburgh Pirates fans focused their energy on a batboy at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Sunday, September 8, during the Pirates’ 0-2 loss to the St Louis Cardinals.

Cardinals pitcher Jack Flaherty, 23, struck out 10 in eight scoreless innings to lead the Cardinals to a 2-0 win over the Pirates.

The disappointing display from the home team left one group of baseball fans seeking entertainment elsewhere.

A group of Pirates fans sitting by the dugout focused their support on a Pirates batboy after they realized defeat was inevitable.

Shawn Stewart said he and his brother began cheering for Chris the batboy after they saw he crossed the home plate more often than the Pirates.

Speaking to Storyful, Stewart said he and his brother began cheering for Chris and soon fans sitting around them joined in on the fun.

“It was amazing because you could tell Chris was loving it,” Stewart said. Credit: Shawn Stewart via Storyful
