Sir David Jason is set to look back at his prestigious television career in two new documentaries, one of which will focus on Only Fools and Horses.

The 76-year-old actor, who played the iconic Del Boy Trotter in the long-running show, will front five-part special The Story of Only Fools and Horses in addition to David Jason: My Life on Screen, a three-part series revisiting his decades-long career.

The acting veteran, whose other TV triumphs include A Touch of Frost and Open All Hours, wants to "give an accurate insight into how the show was put together".

He said: "It has taken a lot of persuasion for me to take part in an official documentary about Only Fools and Horses.

"But, as time has gone on, it seems to have been imprinted in television history and I thought it was only right that I tried to give an accurate insight into how the show was put together.

"In doing so, I hope we can create a definitive programme which appeals to the many fans which have been the stalwarts of the show and are growing with the next generation. It should be fun!"

He added: "Fingers crossed, it should make for an enjoyable programme to reflect the enjoyment I've had in making each and every show."

The TV tributes have been commissioned by UKTV and will air on Gold to celebrate the channel's 25th anniversary this year.

General manager of the channel Steve North said: "I am so excited to be working with Sir David Jason to help celebrate Gold's 25th birthday this year, and really delve into one of the most loved shows and actors on the channel.

"I personally can't wait to get to know more about the man behind some of our best performing comedies."

It comes after Sir David Jason confirmed that the legendary show won't be returning anytime soon...

😭 😭 😭

The 76-year-old actor recently said that although he likes the idea of bringing the comedy show back , they "haven't got a writer".

Original writer John Sullivan died in 2011, and it seems that Sir David isn't keen on continuing the show without him.

He said: "If we had the wonderful writer, the lovely John Sullivan, we would, I tell you.

"But we haven't got a writer, and my partner Nick (Lyndhurst) has gone on to do other things. So you're stuck with Open All Hours!"

Only Fools and Horses ran on the BBC from 1981 to 2003, making it one of Britain's longest-running comedies.

The last time David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst appeared as Del Boy and Rodney Trotter was in a 2014 Sport Relief special, which featured a cameo by David Beckham.

We did of course get prequel Rock & Chips back in 2010, starring The Inbetweeners' Jay Buckley as a young Del Boy, but it looks like that won't be coming back anytime soon either.

We'll just have to content ourselves with watching repeats for now...
