Delays Plague London Bridge Just One DAY After Huge Station Revamp Is Revealed

Commuters at London Bridge station have been left facing delays of more than an hour only a day after the station’s major revamp was unveiled to the public.

Two thirds of the new-look station were revealed for the first time yesterday, allowing passengers to access all platforms from the same level for the first time in the station’s history.

But the station has already been plagued by technical difficulties, with signal failure causing delays of more than one hour for commuters.

A recent update showed that a 09.26 service from Kent would be expected into the station some 41 minutes after it was initially expected.

Commuter James Windle was among those who became caught up in the delays, when his 08.56 train from Catford to London Bridge took over 70 minutes this morning.

Describing the chaos, James told Yahoo News: ‘It took 70 minutes to get to London Bridge on a journey that’s meant to be about 15 minutes.

‘It seemed to be signal failure at Charing Cross, but Southeastern are very good at blaming their problems on strike action and Network Rail - it’s never their fault.’

He also described how passengers were held ‘like cattle’, and given few updates on the status of their journey.

‘The tannoy system on the train is so pathetically quiet, it’s like you deliberately can’t hear a word at all. We were being held there like cattle for 70 minutes.

‘There was confusion, but also resignation to the fact that nothing was going to happen.’

Yesterday, commuters also complained that the new-look platforms were ‘skinnier than ever before’, and risked making overcrowding worse.

Graphic designer David Alexander said: ‘The concourse may be bigger than the pitch at Wembley, but the platforms at new #LondonBridge are skinnier than a hipster’s jeans #fail.’

‘London Bridge is an utter joke’, another commuter said.

Network Rail has been contacted for comment.
