Delta of Lava Juts Into Ocean Off La Palma

Magmatic rock coursing from volcanic eruptions on the Spanish island of La Palma continued to create new land on Tuesday, October 5, as a lava delta protruded further into the ocean.

Drone footage captured on Tuesday by firefighters from the neighboring island of Gran Canaria shows the sizzling, dark mass of lava building up at Perdido Beach on the island’s west coast.

The eruption was first reported on September 19. As of Sunday, October 3, more than 1,000 buildings and over 400 hectares of land (1.5 square miles) had been affected by the eruption, the EU’s Copernicus Emergency Management Service reported. Credit: Bomberos Grancanaria via Storyful
