Deluge of Ice Falls From Lychee Orchard Netting After 'Catastrophic' Hailstorm

The netting installed among the groves of lychee trees at Yanalla Farms in Queensland, to protect the crop from birds, has been getting a hammering from heavy hailstorms over the past year.

Robert Martin, who owns the farm, described the latest storm, on November 17, as “catastrophic,” with tonnes of ice balls accumulating in the nets, stretching and damaging them.

“Our bird netting roof over the lychee orchard is flapping in the breeze having been ripped to shreds,” a post on Facebook by the farm said.

The sheer volume of accumulated hail is seen in this video, showing Martin having to cut one of the nets and release the load. Ice pours out in a spectacular deluge. Credit: Robert Martin via Storyful
