Demi Lovato Under Fire After Mum Jokes About Zika Virus

You know when your mum ends up having a glass of wine - or two, or three, or seven – and then starts to do or say wildly inappropriate things?

Yeah, this is one of those times.

Demi Lovato and her mum have come under fire for saying some not exactly great things about the Rio Olympics, and were heard making jokes about the Zika virus.

Not the wisest move ever, ladies.

The singer shared a video of her mum on Snapchat in which she said:

“Everybody down in Rio gonna get the Zika virus".

Demi could then be heard laughing in the background and added some laughing emojis to the video.

NOT COOL, GUYS.

Anyway, whilst we all do or say silly things when we’re drunk sometimes, it’s slightly different if you’re an uber-famous celebrity and have literally thousands of people following your every move.

Needless to say, the escapades didn’t go down particularly well on Twitter.

Within a matter of hours, #DemiLovatoIsOverParty started trending on Twitter, as people hit out at the pair for making light of the disease - which causes birth defects in babies and has badly affected South America, including in Olympic host city, Rio.

It’s a stark contrast to her behaviour in recent weeks, where the singer had been praised for her level-headedness and sincerity when she addressed the Democratic National Convention to discuss mental health.

She told delegates about her own personal struggles with mental illness:

“Like millions of Americans, I am living with mental illness. But I am lucky, I had the resources and support to get treatment at a top facility.

"Unfortunately too many Americans from all walks of life don’t get help. Either because they fear the stigma, or cannot afford treatment,” she said.

Demi, who’s currently on tour with Nick Jonas, told the convention that she is “living proof that you can live a normal and empowered life with mental illness”.

“Untreated mental illness can lead to devastating consequences, including suicide, substance abuse and long-term medical issues.”

See, she’s not silly ALL the time is she?
