Denim trends 2019: the jeans styles to invest in for autumn

From tie-dye washes to twisted fits, this autumn denim is bending the rules...

1. Go long

Hold on to your waistbands, next season they’re creeping ever closer to our chins. OK, maybe that’s a slight exaggeration, but belt loops that yearn for a close encounter with your bra strap are a definite do. Levi’s Ribcage jeans are still among the highest rises around. For autumn, its hero style is also wide cut, so will leave you looking about 10 feet tall. (£100, levi.com)

2. Dye-hard denim

Summer may be fading, but that doesn’t mean our new-found infatuation with tie-dye has to. While itty-bitty silk slips and board shorts may be off the agenda for autumn, LA export Mother Denim has decreed dip-dyed denim to be the best way to do psychedelia in the new season.

Part of the brand’s new Mystical collection — which launched on the date of the Lion’s Gate Portal, an annual astrological alignment which, among crystal-toting, gong-bathing types, is believed to increase cosmic energy flowing between the physical and spiritual realms. The bestselling bootcuts are available to purchase alongside “Cosmic Download” sweatshirts and Chakra sprays. (£196, motherdenim.com)

3. Ahead of the curve

The shape of the new season is not a straightforward affair. Nor, for that matter, is it a kick flare. Or even a skinny crop. Instead, it’s all about the barrel. Sure, it’s not the sexiest- sounding name for a style of jeans, but the barrel, with its wide, gently curved leg, is a surprisingly flattering addition to our daily denim wardrobe.

Cos’s new Barrel Leg jeans are available in five shades — sage-beige, cream, vintage blue and both washed and jet black — and new colour processes in play help minimise washing and save water. Throughout August, visitors to the Regent Street flagship will also have the opportunity to get free next-day customisations and repairs to their jeans, both new and old, while denim care and styling consultations will be held every Saturday.

Elsewhere, Levi’s Made & Crafted range also offers barrel jeans with patchwork pockets or embroidered details, while Topshop’s new Idol collection champions a banana leg Ovoid jean that is equally ahead of the curve. (£69, cosstores.com)

4. Do get it twisted

…and the award for the jeans your boyfriend won’t understand but the fashion world will love goes to... Frame! And its Exposed Overlap Pegged jean. So named for the skew-whiff waistband fastening which gives it super-casj, thrown-on vibes, it takes relaxed denim to a whole new level. Any footwear goes, but ensure you French-tuck your top to make the most of the effect.

5. Pure and simple

White jeans are not just for summer. They’re also not for everyone. But for doubters of either camp, Arket’s latest denim drop is out to convince you that they’re an autumn must.

Due to land in stores this Thursday, the Scandi-simple and slightly Seventies cut of its off-white jeans are complemented by contrasting stitching and will look ace with the matching white boots from last season. It’s also the first full range for the brand to be crafted from 100 per cent organic cotton.

What’s more, Arket’s Denim Satisfaction Guarantee lets customers try any pair of jeans for a whole month and return them for a full refund, so now there’s no excuse not to give them a try.
