Denise Van Outen has shared more details about her upcoming Neighbours role as Harlow's mother Prue.

The actress and presenter announced back in June that she'd be joining the Australian soap, and now she's explained how the role came about.

Speaking on The Ray D'Arcy Show on Saturday (September 14), she said: "I’ve just spent the last few weeks in Australia. It came about because the producer wanted an English actress to play the mother of a character who was already in the show called Harlow, who is played by Jemma Donovan, who is Jason Donovan’s daughter."

Denise then revealed that her character was travelling in the 1990s and became pregnant after an affair with Robert Robinson.

"She brings up her child in the UK and then the child, Harlow, goes to Australia to seek out her relatives and that’s how I end up going over to Australia," she said.

Following the announcement of her casting back in June, Denise said she was "thrilled to be joining the cast of one of the world's most iconic shows".

"To be asked is a privilege and I am very excited to get to work on a really fun storyline first in London and then heading over to Melbourne.

"I can't say too much just yet but my character Prue is heading to Ramsay Street to stir things up and I can't wait!"

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 5.30pm on Channel 5 (UK) and 6.30pm on 10 Peach (Australia).
