Dennis Quaid has done his bit for the animals by adopting a cat who shares the same name as him.

The rescue cat was living at Lynchburg Humane Society in Virginia when he saw the six-year-old pet feature in a 'clear the shelters' campaign on local TV.

"I just couldn’t resist. I had to," Quaid, the actor, shared with local news station WSLS. "I’m out to save all the Dennis Quaids of the world."

"Maybe they should start naming animals in shelters after different celebrities and see who bites," he added.

At first staff at the shelter didn't believe the Parent Trap star was really reaching out to take on the black cat, the station reported.

Meanwhile, 66-year-old Quaid has recently started an animal-focused podcast, The Pet Show.

His co-host Jimmy Jellinek is set to pick up Quaid the cat from the shelter at the weekend.

Back in June, Quaid secretly wed his 27-year-old girlfriend Laura Savoie in a secret ceremony.

Like many preparing to tie the knot, their wedding plans had been disrupted by the pandemic as they were originally planning to marry in Hawaii back in April.

Instead they said "I do" at a seaside resort in Santa Barbara, California, on 2 June with a pastor as witness.

The Dragonheart actor became engaged to Savoie last October as they holidayed in Hawaii.
