Dennis Quaid's Parent Trap co-star had the best response to his engagement news

Dennis Quaid has announced his engagement to a woman 39 years his junior, and The Parent Trap co-star Elaine Hendrix couldn’t resist a dig.

The 65-year-old actor - who starred opposite Hendrix, Linday Lohan and Natasha Richardson in the Disney movie about two twins’ plot to get the parents back together - has revealed he is engaged to 26-year-old Laura Savoie.

Hendrix, who played his young, gold-digging fiancee in The Parent Trap, tweeted in response to the news: “Watch out for those twins.”

Quaid, who has 12-year-old twins from a previous marriage, confirmed to Extra that he had proposed to Savoie in Hawaii: “It happened on the very northernmost point of Oahu, at Turtle Bay. It was kind of spontaneous. It was very much a surprise.”

“I had the ring in my pocket… It has been kind of a month-and-a-half plan… I wanted it to be private.

“She was actually taking a selfie of us, and I put the ring in front and said, 'Will you marry me?' - and then she fell down.”

In The Parent Trap - which was released in cinemas in 1998 - Quaid’s character gets engaged to 26-year-old Meredith Blake - played by Hendrix, now 48 - who secretly plots to send his twin daughters, played by Lohan, off to boarding school in Switzerland. The twins do their best to get Blake out of the picture so that they can get their parents back together.

In the film Lohan quips: “You’re going to adopt Meredith”, and “How can you marry a woman young enough to be my big sister?”

Quaid was first pictured with University of Texas PhD student Savoie in May this year, after he split from his girlfriend of three years Santa Auzina.

The Big Easy star has been married three times before. First to actress PJ Soles from 1978 until 1983, and then to Meg Ryan from 1991 to 2000, welcoming a son, Jack, in 1992. Quaid married real estate agent Kimberly Buffington in 2004, and the couple are parents to twins Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace, born via surrogate in 2007. Their on-off relationship ended for good in 2016.

Savioie has previously dated Entourage star Jeremy Piven.
