A pair of depraved killers who drugged, raped, and murdered a young dad have been jailed for life. Dylan Brister, 27, and Cameron Allan, 21, spiked Calum Simpson’s drink, leaving him unconscious at a property in Methil, Fife, in November 2021.

They raped the 24-year-old and filmed the attack on a mobile phone.

Brister was sentenced to a minimum 23 years, while Allan had 19 years imposed, with both having their details added to the Sex Offenders Register for life. They were found guilty of the heinous crimes following a trial at the High Court in Edinburgh earlier this year.

A member of Mr Simpson's family shouted "rot in hell" at the duo as they were led away to cells after being sentenced at the High Court in Dundee.

The killers had spent the day plotting a threesome and had met Mr Simpson through a mutual friend earlier that day.

The court heard it wasn't clear why Mr Simpson had been in Brister's home but there was no evidence to suggest he had any reason to anticipate what was going to happen.

The pair tried to arrange meeting another man through Grindr and spoke about tying him up, but he called off when they began to refer to using drugs.

Lord Harrower said: "His narrow escape was Calum Simpson's misfortune. While he was unconscious...you subjected Calum Simpson to a sustained assault. You tied him up and raped him.

"You made several video recordings of your activities with a phone, but managed to delete them.

"Rather than seeking medical assistance, you left him lying unconscious. He was cold and stiff to the touch."

The alarm wasn't raised until almost ten hours later.

The pair were caught when specialist officers were able to recover one of the videos.

Details heard during the trial were so depraved that the judge excused the jurors from further jury service for the rest of their lives.

Advocate depute Angela Gray earlier told the court: "They drugged him for their sexual gratification. That drugging was wickedly reckless to the consequences and in so doing they had a complete disregard for the safety and the life of Calum Simpson."

The prosecutor said the film was "a glimpse into the depravity" and the dynamic between Brister and Allan.

During the footage, Allan could be heard saying to his accomplice: "At least he is still breathing."

Mr Simpson died from intoxication caused by the Class C drug Etizolam – commonly found in ‘street Valium’ - and alcohol.

The father-of-four had welcomed a baby just 11 days before the attack.

Sentencing Brister and Allan, Lord Harrower said: "You were jointly engaged in a plan to make sure that Calum Simpson didn't get up. Whether or not you intended to kill him, you proved yourselves completely indifferent as to whether he lived or died. What you did amounted to murder.

He added: "Personal statements from his partner, mother and aunt bear witness to the terrible devastation of his whole family. No sentence of this court will alleviate the family's grief."

Moira Orr, who leads on homicide and major crime for the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS), said: “The depraved and predatory actions of Dylan Brister and Cameron Allan have robbed a family of their loving son, father, partner, nephew and grandson.

"They showed a blatant disregard for their victim’s safety and life by spiking his drink with drugs before subjecting him to the most harrowing sexual abuse.

“We have worked hard to deliver justice for Calum Simpson and his family, who continue to deal with the devastation and trauma of losing their loved one.

"The COPFS team used every tool at our disposal to ensure these two men faced the consequences of their despicable actions. Our thoughts remain with Calum’s family and friends.”
