The idyllic Derbyshire town of Bakewell has been named the top place in the country for a UK getaway, a study has revealed.

Holiday Cottages curated a list of the best UK destinations to explore in just 48 hours and placed the Peak District town of Bakewell at the top. The list also includes six other towns across the UK that are ideal for Brits looking for a cosy weekend getaway.

Bakewell, just under an hour away from Derby, is nestled in the heart of the Peak District. Holiday Cottages said the town, made famous by the Bakewell pudding, offers a charming mix of history, natural beauty and local delights, including a riverside walk across the River Wye and the historic Bakewell Bridge.

As well as natural beauty, the company has recommended visitors should not miss out on Chatsworth House, a grand estate just a short drive away, or Haddon Hall, both offering a glimpse into the region’s rich heritage.

They say: "Stroll through the town’s quaint streets lined with independent shops and try the famous Bakewell pudding at The Original Bakewell Pudding Shop. For outdoor enthusiasts, nearby trails like Monsal Trail provide the perfect opportunity for hiking or cycling amidst stunning landscapes. Where to stay in Bakewell

One of the most popular B&Bs in the town is River Cottage. Situated on the banks of the River Wye, it is perfectly located for either business or pleasure in the area. Or you can try Bagshaw Hall or Sleep Lodge, which boasts boutique-style bedrooms and luxury suites and apartments.

Holiday Cottages says it has seen a 22% increase of Brits opting for shorter, more frequent breaks. Shannon Keary, Digital PR Manager at holidaycottages.co.uk, said: “We hope these recommendations inspire more people to embrace the joy of staycations and discover the hidden gems right on their doorstep."

Bakwell beat these other places to the top of the list: Ambleside in Cumbria, Dartmouth in Devon, Aldeburgh in Suffork, St Davids in Wales and Knaresborough in Yorkshire.
