Derriford Hospital praised for secret garden that is a 'haven' for intensive care patients
Derriford Hospital's secret garden for intensive care patients has picked up a prestigious award. The calming outdoor space was designed for critically ill patients, their families, and staff.
The bespoke garden room opened in 2022 - inspired by a patient who wanted to be reunited with his dogs. Previously a grey courtyard on level four of the hospital, it was transformed into a functional, outdoor ICU complete with accessible paths, therapeutic greenery, and seating areas.
It has now won the 2024 PENNA (Patient Experience National Network) Award for Best Patient Environment Initiative. The awards recognise innovative initiatives that significantly enhance patient care and experience.

The ICU Secret Garden was funded through NHS Charities Together, alongside contributions from local donors.
Corinne Smith, head of Plymouth Hospitals Charity, said: "Winning the PENNA Award is a huge honour for UHP and a true reflection of the positive difference the ICU Secret Garden has made. It is a haven where patients can experience moments of peace and nature, which are crucial for mental and emotional recovery.
"We are immensely thankful to our fundraisers and NHS Charities Together for their generous support, without which this project would not have been possible."
Kate Tantum, a specialist sister at Derriford’s ICU, said: "The Secret Garden team are thrilled that their work to improve patient, loved one and colleague experience using fresh air spaces has been nationally recognised. We are very proud of our capacity to provide care for our amazing patients and loved ones irrespective of severity of illness and age."
