Alongside Sutherland as President Tom Kirkman, Designated Survivor stars Adan Canto as Aaron Shore, Italia Ricci as Emily Rhodes, LaMonica Garrett as Mike Ritter, Kal Penn as Seth Wright and Maggie Q as Hannah Wells.

Previously, Designated Survivor killed off the First Lady, Kirkman's wife Alex (Natasha McElhone), in the season 2 midseason finale.

Speaking about the shocking death, showrunner Keith Eisner told TVLine that the President won't have "moved past grief completely".

"We're going to pick up with how he has been dealing with the loss of his wife and the mother of his children, his best friend. And it's not an easy transition.

"Episode 11 deals with that uneasiness in a very interesting way, and the remaining part of the season will deal with it too, the consequences of being alone and what that means for him," he explained.

Designated Survivor airs on Wednesdays on ABC in the US and on Thursdays on Netflix in the UK.
