If Designated Survivor gets a third term in office, it'll be doing it without a major character.

Deadline reports that Natascha McElhone will be departing the series after the end of the second season, which kicked off last night (September 27) in the US, leaving Kiefer Sutherland's President Kirkman without a First Lady.

It's not yet clear how McElhone's Alex Kirkman will leave the series, but we do already know what she'll be doing next.

McElhone will be starring opposite Sean Penn in House of Cards creator Beau Willimon's sci-fi thriller The First, which is set to premiere on Hulu in the US and Channel 4 in the UK next year.

The First follows the first human mission to Mars and will explore the challenges of interplanetary colonisation. McElhone is said to be playing the British CEO of the company behind the mission to Mars.

"I am so excited to work with original, maverick artists like Beau Willimon and Sean Penn – it's a real privilege to be invited," she enthused.

"What I so admire about Natascha's work is the fearlessness and honesty she brings to every role," added Willimon. "She's a wonderfully talented adventurer of the spirit, and I'm thrilled to be embarking on this journey with her."

Designated Survivor airs on ABC in the US and Netflix in the UK.
