Designs revealed for new BMX pump track in town park after years of work
The designs for a new BMX pump track in March have been revealed, three years after the project was set up to try and get a new track opened in the town. The new track is proposed to be built in West End Park and would be free for people to come and use. The plans for the BMX track have been submitted by Fenland District Council to its planning department for consideration.
A letter from Cambridgeshire County Council has been published as part of the planning application, which explains the work that has taken place to get the project to this point. It said ‘The Wheelz Project’ was set up three years ago by a small group who consulted the March community to find out the need for a new facility and then worked to design a track and gain support.
The letter said the group had fundraised for the project, but had also worked with the county council to get “significant external funding”, including £100,000 from the Youth Investment Fund and Mick George. The county council said: “Built from dirt and asphalt the facility will be a gateway to developing a lifelong interest in a sport - not only cycling, but other wheeled sports like skateboarding, scooters, roller skating, and wheelchairs, helping to keep people active and healthy.

“Our track will offer an affordable low barrier to entry facility, whilst encouraging participation, developing cycle skills and rider confidence in a safe controlled environment. It will be free to access [and] use and provide regular opportunities for riders to progress, gain confidence and most importantly have fun.”
The county council said in its letter that the funding from Mick George came with tight deadlines and needed to be spent by September this year. However, the authority has confirmed that the funding deadline has been extended through to the new year at least.
