Cities and towns across Northern Ireland will fall silent this Remembrance Sunday to honour and remember the service and sacrifice of all those that have defended our freedoms and protected our way of life.

It's a moment to remember members of the Armed Forces and their families and the vital role played by the emergency services and those who have lost their lives as a result of conflict or terrorism.

Thousands of veterans proudly wearing their medals, military families and the public will gather in remembrance of all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

The National Service of Remembrance to honour the nation’s war dead, held at The Cenotaph in London's Whitehall on Remembrance Sunday, will be attended by King Charles and members of the royal family. The Princess of Wales is to attend both the Remembrance Sunday service at the Cenotaph and the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall this weekend, Buckingham Palace has announced.

It marks the next significant step in her gradual return to public royal duties following her cancer diagnosis and will be the first time she has carried out two consecutive days of public official engagements since the start of the year.

Here's a round up of some of the Remembrance Sunday services taking place across NI:

Belfast

Stormont's First Minister Michelle O’Neill is to participate in the Remembrance Sunday ceremony at Belfast City Hall – the first time a senior Sinn Fein figure will take part in such an event in Northern Ireland.

The party's vice president said her attendance was a demonstration of her determination to fulfil her pledge to be a “First Minister for all”. Ms O’Neill, who will lay a laurel wreath at the Cenotaph in Belfast in her role as First Minister, will attend with DUP deputy First Minister Emma Little Pengelly.

Separately, all staff and students, families and friends are invited to attend Queen's University’s Remembrance Day Ceremony on Sunday 10 November at 11.00am at the cenotaph, Lanyon Building.

Enniskillen

Elsewhere Simon Harris will not travel to the annual Remembrance Sunday commemoration at Enniskillen, in a notable break with the tradition of the sitting Taoiseach attending. Ireland's Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys will attend instead, representing a significant break in a tradition begun by former Taoiseach Enda Kenny.

Mr Kenny became the first Taoiseach to attend a Remembrance Day service in Northern Ireland when he took part in commemorations at Enniskillen in 2012, in a move seen as symbolic of greater recognition afforded in the Republic of Ireland to Irishmen who fought and died serving in the British Army in the First World War.

His attendance also marked the 25th anniversary of an IRA bombing at the memorial in 1987. The tradition has been followed almost every year since Mr Kenny placed a laurel wreath at the base of the memorial.

A large crowd is expected to line out in Belmore Street in Enniskillen on Sunday morning for the annual Act of Remembrance Ceremony at the Cenotaph. A short ecumenical service will start at 10.50am on Sunday, incorporating the four main churches in Enniskillen. The two-minute silence will then commence at 11am.
