New details of Sinéad O’Connor’s cause of death revealed by coroner 1 year later: Report
The legendary singer-songwriter died of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma in June 2023.
Sinéad O'Connor's exact cause of death has been revealed by a United Kingdom coroner, one year after the Irish singer-songwriter unexpectedly died at age 56.
The Irish Independent reports that the Grammy-winner died in July 2023 from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma. Citing her death certificate, the outlet noted that her death was specifically a result of "exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchial asthma together with low grade lower respiratory tract infection.”
The London Inner South Coroner's office did not immediately respond to Entertainment Weekly’s request for comment.
The "Nothing Compares 2 U" singer was 56 years old when she was found "unresponsive" at a London home on July 26, 2023. A clerk for the coroner’s office subsequently confirmed to EW in an email that O’Connor died of natural causes.
O'Connor's family announced her death in a brief statement, writing, "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time."
O’Connor had previously been open about her mental health struggles, which she often candidly addressed on social media. In 2022, following the death of her 17-year-old son Shane, the singer endured a public health crisis. She published a series of tweets, writing, "There is no point living without him. Everything I touch, I ruin. I only stayed for him. And now he's gone." She later sought help at a hospital.
O’Connor is survived by her three children.
Following the legendary singer’s death, a wave of tributes honored her life and impact on the recording industry. Last week, to mark the one year anniversary of her passing, Dublin's National Wax Museum unveiled O’Connor’s own wax figure. One day after its debut, following a wave of backlash from fans and her brother, the museum announced that the figure would be removed and recreated.
“We acknowledge that the current representation did not meet our high standards or the expectations of Sinéad's devoted fans,” the museum announced in a statement. “We have listened closely to the reactions and agree that the figure does not fully capture Sinéad's unique presence and essence as we intended."
The statement said the museum was “committed to creating a new wax figure that better reflects Sinéad O'Connor's true spirit and iconic image."
