A veteran police officer died after being shot in the neck with a "high-powered" rifle during a home invasion in Detroit, authorities said.

The killing happened on Wednesday night as officers responded to the incident in the west side of the city.

Detroit police chief James Craig told NBC: "The suspect, who was armed with a high-powered rifle, began to open fire on the officers."

The slain officer, a 17-year veteran of the force, "sustained a single gunshot wound to his neck", Mr James said.

He added: "Because it was a high-powered rifle, the round reversed up through the rear of his skull, where the bullet was lodged."

Another officer was shot in the leg when the shooter opened fire as the pair came down a set of stairs.

He is seriously wounded but expected to recover.

Other officers returned fire and shot the suspected gunman, who has not been identified.

The suspect is in a serious condition in hospital.

There was a heavy police presence on the scene, while a helicopter was seen circulating overhead.

Detroit Police Department tweeted: "We regret to announce the passing of one of our officers, who was killed in the line of duty. He was a 17 veteran of the DPD who served with dedication and valor, an American hero will be missed and forever remembered. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends."

City Mayor Mike Duggan also shared his condolences to the officer's family.

He tweeted: "Our hearts go out to the family of the 17-year veteran officer of the Detroit Police who was killed in the line of duty tonight while responding to a home invasion. This tragedy is a reminder of the tremendous debt we owe to all our police officers."
