“Monkey Man,” Patel’s directorial debut, world premiered at SXSW in March before landing in theaters on April 5, where it collected $34 million worldwide.

Produced by Jordan Peele, the movie follows a young man (Patel) who spends his nights at an underground fight club in India, where he makes money being beaten up by more popular fighters. After years of rage bubbling up to the surface, the man embarks on a bloody quest for revenge against the city’s shady elite, and the powerful official responsible for the murder of his mother.

Variety chief film critic Owen Gleiberman had mixed feelings about the movie, writing in his review, “The action scenes are razory and intense, though much of this slow-burn tale of revenge plays like a glum origin story.”

Patel conceived the story for the film and penned the screenplay with Paul Angunawela and John Collee. He stars alongside Sharlto Copley, Pitobash, Vipin Sharma, Sikandar Kher, Adithi Kalkunte and Zakir Hussain, and produces with Peele, Jomon Thomas, Win Rosenfeld, Ian Cooper, Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Christine Haebler and Anjay Nagpal.

Patel got his start on the British teen drama “Skins” before breaking out as the star of “Slumdog Millionaire.” His other notable roles include “The Green Knight,” “Lion,” “Hotel Mumbai,” “Chappie,” “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” “The Last Airbender” and a handful of Wes Anderson shorts. Next he’ll be seen in Bryn Chainey’s horror movie “Rabbit Trap” and the twisted romance “Wicker” alongside Olivia Colman.
