Developers of a private tower block with Grenfell-style cladding are to pay more than £2 million for a safe replacement to avoid residents having to foot the bill.

Some were facing financial ruin after being told previously they would have to pay at least £15,000 each for the work.

But Barratt Homes, which installed the cladding during construction in 2002, announced in a “surprise” meeting with residents last night that it will cover the cost.

Citiscape, in Croydon, was one of 200 buildings in the UK to fail safety tests carried out after the Grenfell Tower fire, which claimed 71 lives last June.

Ninety five Citiscape flats were affected by aluminium composite panels similar to those used on Grenfell Tower.

Barratt acted after freeholder Proxima GR Properties denied responsibility. Communities Secretary Sajid Javid said it was “the right thing to do”.
